A Reading
Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God – truly righteous and holy. (Ephesians 4: 22-24)
A Thought
We have experienced a progressive deterioration in the life of our Mini.
Over the last year the fan has lost power, so that clearing the windscreen of mist has required opening of windows on a cold or wet day. The stop-start function stopped working and refused to restart, and any attempt to listen to the radio without the engine running has been met with a warning of insufficient power. These warnings greeted us every time we turned the ignition on.
Our mechanic asserted that the dynamo was working efficiently, but it was a chance encounter much later with a technician who suggested a new battery is needed. A new battery was introduced on Tuesday. Amazingly the fan now works, the stop-start does both, and warnings have disappeared. It feels like a new car.
Human life also seems to be a series of problems to endure. God is fully aware of our struggles, which are not how God wishes us to live our lives. So God sent his Son Jesus Christ, who recognises our human failings, to inform us of the solution. A new power unit is required which will drive our lives forward into a new life. That new power unit is the Holy Spirit.
If we believe in Jesus Christ and subscribe to his diagnosis, we can invite the Holy Spirit anew into our lives each day. The Holy Spirit guides us through the mist of temptation, stops us when we stray from the path of righteousness, and helps us to listen to, understand and enjoy the Word of God.
Our opportunistic encounter with Jesus is celebrated later this week. Happy Christmas to you all.
A prayer
Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I am a new person today and that is because of you.
Thank you for the people in my life that never gave up on me.
Thank you for family, friends and strangers who showed me your love through their words and actions.
May I reflect your light so that others will draw closer to you.
Amen
