Mobile phones (16-06-20)

Bible Readings

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. (Psalm 16:8)

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. (Psalm 139:7-10)

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)

Thought

The mobile phone is a wonderful invention, it gives us the ability to contact people even when they are not at home. It would appear that it is no longer acceptable to be uncontactable. Everyone wants to have your mobile phone number so that they can keep in touch with you. The dentist wants it so that they can send you reminders about when your appointment is; the doctor wants it so that they can tell you that your prescription is ready for collection; the delivery company wants it so that they can tell you when your parcel is going to be delivered and even the tax man wants it so that he can send you ‘special codes’ while you are filling in your tax return.

This is all well and good but I live in a house which has terrible mobile phone reception. In fact there is only one place in my house where I can usually guarantee picking up a mobile phone signal, and that is on one specific spot on my bed. So that is where my mobile phone lives when I am at home. There is very little point anyone calling me on it while I am at home as I am unlikely to hear it ring. I wouldn’t be without my mobile phone; when I am out and about I consider it essential, but it does not work everywhere and it certainly does not work well at home.

Thankfully God is nothing like my mobile phone signal. God is everywhere, in fact we can’t get away from God even if we wanted to. There are some people that think you have to be in a special place, or speak using special words, or even dress in a special way in order to communicate with God. But no, God is there, right with you, all the time, wherever you are, however you are dressed, whatever your situation is and you can talk to him and he will listen.

Prayer

Father God, I thank you that you are always with me, that you know me and that you love me. Thank you that your Spirit lives in me.

Amen
