A Bible Reading: Psalms 118:1, 22-24
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
The Lord is responsible for this, and it is amazing for us to see.
This is the day the Lord has made.
Let's rejoice and be glad today!
(Psalms 118:22-24)
A Thought
As we have been adjusting to a new way of living over the past few weeks, with the threat of disease and the restrictions that have been imposed to prevent its spread, I was struck by a phrase in one of the video clips that has been doing the rounds on WhatsApp ‘Don’t count the days, make the days count’.
The restrictions are affecting us all in different ways, depending on our circumstances. But, whatever the changes might mean for us, we each have a choice as to how we will respond, whether we count off the days until ‘normal service is resumed’ or whether we are take hold each day, of the new opportunities that the changes have brought.
The psalmist knew hardship and difficulties in life; elsewhere in the psalm he talks about bring hard-pressed, afraid and surrounded by his enemies, yet he is able to give thanks for the Lord’s goodness and to declare that God's love endures forever. He is also able to see every day as a gift from God, and to rejoice and to be glad each day.
Easter reminds us that Jesus is the cornerstone that the builders rejected. In all the uncertainties of life, he is the foundation that will never shake. With Jesus as our cornerstone, we too can learn to see each new day as a gift from God. We can to rejoice and to be glad today.
A Prayer
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the gift of today and for all the blessings you have given to me, and especially for the gift of your son. Help me to build my life on him as my foundation stone and to rejoice this day, in your love and in your goodness.
Amen.
