A Reading
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)
A Thought
At this time of year, as the ground becomes wetter, our lawn becomes home to a multitude of fungi, exhibiting fascinating colours and structures. Within the categories of living organisms, Fungi are a separate kingdom.
Of the 70,000 species that live in the UK alone, many fungi live underground. They use enzymes to break down organic matter into simple nutrients which they can then absorb. The mushrooms represent the fruits of the fungi. Living essentially below ground, the diameter and density of the mushroom circles on our lawn is a measure of their progressive development.
The Holy Spirit also represents a separate but unique kingdom of living beings.
The Holy Spirit lives out of sight within the human heart and slowly breaks down the sinful urges that occur within the human body. As faith develops, so the Holy Spirit grows in its influence, until the fruits of the Holy Spirit burst through the surface for all to see.
The kingdom of the Holy Spirit represents the love of God for each of us, and the fruits of the Holy Spirit (whether patience, love or kindness) are never inedible.
All in all, a better source of food for the soul.
A prayer
Heavenly Father, we pray that our lives will show the beautiful fruit of the Spirit, which is rooted and grounded in godly love, and produced in a life that is walking in spirit and truth.
Amen
