Adding salt (28-08-21)

A Reading

You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavour? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. (Matthew 5: 13)

Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavour, how do you make it salty again? Flavourless salt is good neither for the soil nor the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand! (Luke 14: 34-35)

A Thought

Many Christians blend into the world and avoid the cost of standing up for Christ. But Jesus says if Christians lose their distinctive saltiness, and make no effort to affect the world around them, they are of little value to God.

Christians should not blend in with everyone else. Instead, just as seasoning brings out the best flavours in food, we are to bring new flavour to life.

The bell ringing group reformed this week after an enforced break due to Covid. Scaldwell was treated to the first practice session on Wednesday evening, as the group seeks once again to master the complex patterns of ringing.

Bell ringing has been associated with Christian churches and worship for over 1500 years. Bell towers are a feature of Christian churches, and bells have for centuries called the congregation to worship.

The small band of campanologists endeavours to preserve this distinctive flavour of Christian presence.

Are we standing out as Christians in our community?

A prayer

Dear Lord,

Please help us to follow faithfully in your footsteps,

bringing love into our community and compassion into the world.

May we be strong in standing up for what is good and right,

reflecting your light in our dark world.

Amen
